Wind Mitigation Repairs That Can Lower a Florida Premium
Florida insurers must offer discounts for wind-resistant features. Here is what the wind mitigation form grades and which repairs change the answers.
A 4-point decides whether an insurer will write the policy. A wind mitigation report decides what it costs. Fla. Stat. 627.0629 requires insurers to include discounts, credits or deductible reductions for homes with features shown to reduce windstorm losses, and 627.711 requires them to tell policyholders about those discounts at issue and at each renewal.
The report is the state’s uniform form, OIR-B1-1802. The current version was revised in April 2026 and has nine questions.
What the form grades
- Building code the home was built under
- Region, the design wind speed for the location
- Roof slope
- Roof covering
- Roof deck attachment, graded by the weakest form found
- Roof to wall attachment, graded by the weakest connection
- Roof geometry
- Sealed roof deck or secondary water resistance
- Opening protection, graded by the weakest protection on any opening
At least one photo or document has to back up each feature marked in questions 2 through 9. A feature nobody can prove does not count.
Which answers a repair can change
Several of those answers are fixed by when and where the house was built. The rest come from the roof and the openings, and those change when the work is done.
- Roof covering, deck attachment and secondary water resistance are set when a roof is replaced. That is the moment to do the deck nailing and the sealed deck, because they sit under the covering.
- Roof to wall attachment depends on the connectors between the roof framing and the walls.
- Opening protection is graded by the weakest opening, so one unprotected window or door sets the grade for the house.
Talk to your agent before the work starts about which answers move your premium, then get a new inspection once it is done.
